ToggleMarch 27: World Theater Day 2024
World Theater Day is celebrated annually on the 27th of March and is organized by the International Theater Institute (ITI). This day is intended to highlight the importance of theater in the history and culture of humanity, through various events and initiatives organized around the world.
Why on the 27th of March
The idea of designating a day a year in honor of the theater came up with the French actor and director Sacha Guitry, was adopted by the ITI at its First International Conference in 1960 and began to be celebrated in 1961.
The International Theater Forum, held in Prague in 1961, adopted the first World Theater Day Message which was written by Jean Cocteau.
Since then, annually, on this day, an international actor or playwright is commissioned by ITI to write a message that is translated into more than 30 different languages, in order to address all workers in the performing arts around the world.
The International Committee of this day circulates this message and encourages its dissemination worldwide through the performing arts media.
Chosen this year to direct the traditional March 27th message, was the Norwegian playwright and writer Jon Fosse, Nobel Prize for Literature 2023.
The Origin of Theater
As we know it, it emerged in Ancient Greece and, since Classical Antiquity, has become one of the most common and popular artistic languages in Western societies.
Currently there is a wide variety of genres, which demonstrates the richness of this artistic language.
It is an art form in which people (actors or actresses) represent a particular story to an audience. It can be staged through a script, created by screenwriters and playwrights, but it can also happen through the actors' improvisation.
This art form, was cataloged as the second art, in the list of arts created in 1912 by Ricciotto Canudo, in your "Manifesto of the Seven Arts” which would not be published until 1923.
What do you think of this day? Are you going to pay a visit to the Theatre, at least today? We want to know your opinion, do not hesitate to comment and if you liked the article, share and give a “like/like”.
