March 23rd is World Meteorology Day

Every year, on March 23, World Meteorology Day is celebrated, marking the creation of the world meteorological organization (WMO) with the entry into force of the “World Meteorological Organization Convention” in 1950.

The weather, climate and intensity of weather conditions are changing in many parts of the world, as a direct result of climate change. This situation exposes us to multiple dangers and has evolved negatively due to population growth, urbanization and environmental degradation.

World Meteorological Day 2024

The theme for this year 2024 is:  Frontline climate action.

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 commits us to taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This is an absolutely essential objective as it underpins the progress of all the other SDGs.
This celebration also aims to highlight the importance of the work of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) community in the desire of our societies and, more recently, for climate action and the achievement of the SDGs at all levels.
The work carried out in this context allows:
_ reduce hunger and poverty; improve health and well-being;
_ guarantee clean water and clean, accessible energy;
_ protect life below water and life on land;
_ make our cities and communities more resilient to climate change.
Weather and climate forecasts help increase food production and get closer to the goal of zero hunger. Integrating epidemiological and climate information helps understand and manage climate-sensitive diseases. And early warning systems help reduce poverty by giving people the opportunity to prepare for and limit the impact of extreme weather.
WMO, its members and partners drive the entire value cycle, from science to services and action for the good of society. It promotes knowledge of our Earth system, monitors the state of climate and water resources, provides scientific information to inform greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and provides climate services and early warnings to support climate adaptation.
Science is fundamental to finding solutions to problems and has the capacity to drive progress towards the SDGs at all levels.
WMO remains at the forefront of climate action as we work towards cooperation and innovation, leveraging collective experience to overcome challenges and achieve our shared vision of a safer, more resilient world for future generations.

Conclusion

Rapid scientific and technological advances, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, have significantly improved the accuracy of life-saving weather forecasts and early warnings.

The current challenge for meteorology is to adapt to future conditions, facing the associated challenges and taking advantage of the opportunities provided by meteorological, climate and hydrological services.
