The International Day of Light, celebrated every 16th of May, is a global initiative coordinated by UNESCO to highlight the crucial role that light and light-based technologies play in our lives, society and sustainable development.
What is the International Day of Light?
The International Day of Light was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2017 and the first celebration took place the following year, in 2018. This date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the first successful operation of a laser, performed by Theodore Maiman in 1960.
This day aims to raise global awareness of how light-based technologies and applications promote sustainable development and offer solutions to global challenges in the areas of energy, education, agriculture and health.
The Importance of Light
Light is essential for human existence. Since the creation of fire, light has been an inseparable part of human life. But the role of light goes much further. It is light that enables photosynthesis in plants which in turn sustains life on Earth.
Light also plays a significant role in many scientific and technological areas, including medicine, communications, entertainment and energy. The invention of the laser, for example, revolutionized medicine and communications and is one of the many ways that light is used in modern technology.
Light and Sustainable Development
Light is also a key element in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Solar energy, a clean and renewable source of energy, is a perfect example of how light can be used to promote sustainability. In addition, LED technology is an efficient form of lighting that saves energy and reduces carbon emissions.
Furthermore, light plays a crucial role in accessing education, especially in remote areas. Sunlight can be used to power schools and homes, allowing children to study even after sunset.
