September 21st is the International Day of Peace

“Peace is more necessary today than ever” - António Guterres, UN Secretary-General.

September 21st is the International Day of Peace.

The International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on September 21st. It is a day dedicated to reinforcing the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefires around the world.

This year’s theme is “Actions for Peace: Our ambition for the #GlobalGoals”. It is a call to action that recognizes individual and collective responsibility to promote peace.

This Day was established in 1981 and proclaimed in Resolution 55/282 adopted at the General Assembly of ONU on September 28, 2001.

Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals

Each year, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21st. The United Nations General Assembly declared this day as a time dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, through the observance of 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire. And never before has our world needed peace so much.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stated:

“Peace is needed today more than ever.”

“War and conflict are unleashing devastation, poverty and hunger and are forcing tens of millions of people to leave their homes.”

“Climate chaos is all around us, and even peaceful countries are plunged into stark inequalities and political polarization.”

And because of all this, this year’s theme is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals".

It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the SDGs will create a culture of peace for all.

The SDGs and the International Day of Peace

2023 marks the midpoint in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The observance of the 2023 International Day of Peace coincides with the SDG summit (18-19 September) to mark this halfway milestone.

The SDGs aim to bring us closer to more peaceful, fair and inclusive societies, free from fear and violence. But without the involvement and contribution of a wide range of actors, including the 1,2 billion young people alive, the goals will not be achieved.

We invite you to join the United Nations call to act for peace: combat inequality, promote action against climate change, and promote and protect human rights.

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

2023 is also the 75th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

International Day of Peace 2023 encourages all young people to be ambitious in their involvement as positive and constructive social agents and to join the movement to achieve the SDGs and contribute to building sustainable peace. Together, we can help lead our world towards a greener, more equitable, just and safer future for all.

Context of the International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly voted unanimously to designate the Day as a worldwide period of nonviolence and ceasefire.

This decision implies that all countries that have signed the United Nations Charter, if they are at war, will have to observe the ceasefire, at least for 24 hours on this day.

Why Do We Celebrate International Days?

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public about issues of concern, mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and celebrate and reinforce humanity's achievements.

The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has adopted them as a powerful defense tool. We also celebrate other UN observances.

Conclusion

The International Day of Peace should be a day dedicated to reflecting on global peace and the efforts that each of us makes, or has already made, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The celebration of this year's International Day of Peace, 2023, coincides with the SDG summit, which highlights the link between peace and sustainable development.

Furthermore, we cannot forget that this day is a global period of non-violence and ceasefire, which, on the one hand, theoretically stops all wars on the planet at least for a day, should also remind us, common mortals, that we must, at least for today, abstain from any type of violence, be it moral, physical or psychological.
