End of the African Dream in the Beach Soccer World Cup

Senegal bows out of the Beach Soccer World Cup after a tough defeat to Belarus. Africa's last hope faded in the semifinals, leaving the continent without representatives in the final. However, the Portuguese-speaking world—already guaranteed a place in the final, as the other semifinal was between Portugal and Brazil—will be represented by Brazil.

End of the African Dream in the Beach Soccer World Cup

The African dream ended at the Beach Soccer World Cup, taking place in the Seychelles, with Senegal losing 5-2 to Belarus in Saturday's semi-finals. The match, played at the Paradise Arena in Victoria, eliminated the African team from the first final in its history. Now the battle for third place remains, which will be against Portugal.

The African champions had shown solidity in previous matches, eliminating Italy in the quarterfinals. However, defensive errors and the Belarusian's efficiency turned things around. The match began with Senegal wasting opportunities, including a clear miss by Mamadou Sylla in the 11th minute.

Mikhail Avgustov opened the scoring for Belarus, capitalizing on a pass back poorly controlled by goalkeeper Al-Seyni Ndiaye. Sidy Fall equalized shortly after, but the African comeback lasted only one period. In the second third, the Europeans dominated with three quick goals.

Ihar Bryshtsel and Aleh Hapon extended the lead, while the Senegalese lost their composure. Mamour Diagne pulled one back in the final period, but Vadzim Bokach ended Africa's hopes. The team left the arena with the bitterness of a historic opportunity lost.

In the other semi-final, Portugal lost to Brazil 4-2. Thus, Brazil, six-time champions since the competition began to be organized by FIFA, will face Belarus in the final, to be held tomorrow, Sunday, May 11, 2025.

The Decisive Gameo

Senegal, the leader of African beach soccer, faced a rising Belarus. The opening minutes were nerve-wracking, with technical errors on both sides. Avgustov's ninth-minute opener gave the Europeans confidence.

Senegal's response came through Sidy Fall, who capitalized on a precise cross from Ninou Diatta. The equalizer was short-lived: Bryshtsel converted a free kick in the 15th minute, exposing the African defensive fragility. Hapon doubled the lead with a outside-of-the-foot shot, and Bryshtsel scored again before halftime.

In the final period, Senegal pressed, but their lack of precision in their finishing proved costly. Mamour Diagne reduced the deficit to 4-2, briefly rekindling hope. Bokach, however, sealed the victory with a goal in the final minutes. The Africans ended the period with nine fouls committed, compared to their opponents' five.

Continental Consequencess

Senegal's elimination from the Beach Soccer World Cup represents a setback for African beach soccer, especially given its importance in the sport. In the last four editions, only Senegal has reached the semi-finals, without ever reaching the final. The defeat reinforces the need for investment in infrastructure and training.

Comparatively, Europe and South America maintain their dominance, with Brazil, Portugal, and Russia as powerhouses. Belarus, now a finalist, demonstrates how less traditional teams can evolve with good planning. Africa, despite its individual talent, lacks solid collective strategies.

Third place, against Portugal, is Senegal's final goal. A victory would guarantee the first bronze medal in African history in the sport. However, the absence of Mandione Diagne, who is suspended, complicates the task. The continent hopes for a gesture of redemption before the end of the tournament.

The Portuguese team opened the scoring in the eighth minute through Bernardo Lopes, with Brazil turning the game around with goals from Thanger (13 minutes) and Filipe (16 minutes).

In the 19th minute, André Lourenço made it 2-2, but goals from Rodrigo (28 minutes) and Catarino (32 minutes) pushed the Portuguese team, current European champions and three-time World Cup winners (2001, 2015 and 2019, the last two under FIFA's auspices), into the third and fourth place match against Senegal this Sunday.

Conclusiono

The 2025 Beach Soccer World Cup confirms the gap between Africa and the sport's elite. Senegal, though talented, succumbed to critical errors and the pressure of the moment. Belarus, a first-time finalist, proves that tactical evolution trumps mere individual skill.

For the continent, the challenge lies in transforming potential into results. Investing in academies and participating in international tournaments are urgent steps. Meanwhile, Senegal bears the burden of a generation that promised but failed to deliver.
