This is the seventh of these conversations, and given what is currently happening between Israel and Palestine, the conversation was about the conflict in the Middle East and the risks it poses, not only for Africa, but for the rest of the world in general.
The Conversation
In this conversation, we addressed the conflicts between the Jewish world and the Arab world, focusing on the complexity of these ancient problems.
We reflect on the maxim of a Jewish historian who highlights the importance of understanding in order to forgive, but also recognizes the limits of this forgiveness, especially in events such as the one that occurred on October 7th, which symbolize millennial tensions between these two brotherly peoples.
The escalation of violence following the October 7th event was discussed, with a historical analysis of the conflicting relations between Israel and Palestine, highlighting the increase in the number of deaths and the lack of clear objectives on the part of Israel, which led to criticism and accusations of genocide by South Africa and the intervention of the International Court of Justice.
Furthermore, the similarities to 11/XNUMX were explored, both in the US and in the Middle East, highlighting the complexity and difficulty of describing the magnitude of these events.
The influence of these events on global geopolitics and international relations was also addressed, from the Arab Spring to the rise of populism and post-truth in our times.
Finally, we discussed the lack of meaningful discourse from the US after the October 7th event, in contrast to Obama's Cairo speech after September 11th, and reflected on the importance of recognizing the gravity of these unnamed events and their historical and political ramifications.
