Guterres Praises Peace Achieved Between DRC and Rwanda
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres released a statement today congratulating the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring Rwanda on the signing of a peace agreement between the two countries. The announcement was made by United States President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Friday, June 27, 2025.
The US brokered the negotiations, with the participation of Qatar and the African Union. For António Guterres, the peace agreement is an important step toward peace and stability not only in eastern DRC, but for the entire Great Lakes region.
Since the 1990s, eastern DRC has been plagued by dozens of armed groups terrorizing the population. Earlier this year, the M23 launched an offensive in the provinces of North and South Kivu, capturing cities and towns, including the provincial capitals of Goma and Bukavu.
Thousands of civilians were killed, hundreds of thousands were displaced, and serious human rights violations were committed. António Guterres also recalled the support of other actors such as the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community in achieving an end to the fighting.
He also called for full respect of the commitments made in Security Council resolution 2773 on the matter in question. The UN Secretary-General also reiterated the organization's support through the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
António Guterres also stated that the UN remains committed to supporting the implementation of the agreement, in close coordination with the African Union and regional and international partners.
What do you think of this peace agreement and the fact that António Guterres and the UN have done nothing to secure it? We want to know your opinion, do not hesitate to comment and if you liked the article, share and give a “like/like”.
