Carlos Lopes Among the “100 Most Influential Africans of 2024”
The personalities highlighted in the list of the “100 most influential Africans of 2024”, by the magazine New African, based in London, reflects the changing trends and priorities in Africa as the continent faces new challenges and opportunities, celebrating the achievements and contributions of people from various fields and sectors who have had a positive impact on the continent and the world during this year.
100 Africans or people of African descent were selected who stood out, in the magazine's opinion, in the categories of “Public service","Business","Civil society","Science and Academia","Opinion Makers","Sports"and "Creativity".
The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was distinguished in the category of “Public service“. The Director of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina and the Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer of the institution, Hassatou Diop N'Sele, were mentioned in the category of “Business".
In the category of “Sports” appears the former footballer of Cape Verdean origin Gelson Fernandes who currently holds the position of FIFA director for African federations and the Algerian Olympic medalist Imane Khelif whose gold medal, according to the magazine, was a victory not only in boxing but also in racial prejudice.
In the category of “Opinion Makers” appears the Guinean economist Carlos Lopes, former executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and current professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and the President of the newly created Liquidity and Sustainability Mechanism, the Cameroonian economist Vera Songwe.
Kenyan activist Binaifer Nowrojee and Tanzanian lawyer and human rights activist Joseph Moses Oleshangay are recognized in the “Civil society“Among the personalities on the list, in the “Science and Academia” category, are Ethiopian scientists Abeba Birhane and Rediet Abebe.
Finally, in the “Creativity” classification of the list of the “100 most influential Africans of 2024”, the magazine highlights names such as British actor Idris Elba and Nigerian chef Adejoké Bakare.
The English-language New African magazine is distributed in over 100 countries, has been published continuously since 1966 in a monthly format and has consistently brought the African point of view to international news.
