African Forests Hold Ancestral Memory

A felled forest exposes more than just the soil. In Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, forest loss can disrupt traditional practices, rituals, agricultural calendars, and rules of sharing. Each clearing reduces survival options in the face of drought, disease, and famine.

African forests cover approximately 663 million hectares, equivalent to 22% of the continent's land surface. The 2025 assessment by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates an annual loss of 3,45 million hectares.

The causes arise primarily from agriculture, mining, the extraction of energy resources, poverty, weak governance, and insecure land tenure in many regions. Satellites measure the area lost, but they do not register the disappearance of a tree used in childbirth, a grove where elders resolve conflicts, or a shade that protects the ensète and the coffee plantation.

These uses underpin health, legal, food, and adaptation systems built through prolonged observation and transmitted through practice and word between successive generations. Functions vary locally. In the coastal Kaya forests, territory remains linked to identity.

Among the Baka of Cameroon, wild plants sustain both food and care. In the Gedeo systems of Ethiopia and the ngitili of Tanzania, trees, customary norms, and agricultural cycles form reserves against scarcity. Destruction threatens each archive distinctly and produces lasting human losses.


Sacred Archives


On the Kenyan coast, the Kaya forests survive like islands between villages, roads, and agricultural areas. UNESCO recognizes ten forest sites along 200 kilometers. Within them remain vestiges of fortified Mijikenda villages. Outside the vegetation enclosures, pressure grows that threatens not only the trees but also the symbolic dwelling place of their ancestors.

The Kaya forests ceased to be residential areas in the 20th century, but retained their religious, funerary, and political functions. Elders regulate entry, collection, and ceremonies. Initiation, marriage, oath, and reconciliation ceremonies uphold the local community order. The forest is a legal and spiritual archive read in gestures, paths, species, and narratives.

Ritual protection preserved fragments of lowland coastal forest. Restrictions on logging and resource extraction maintained useful habitats and plants. The result stemmed from social obligations, fear of sanctions, respect for the dead, and authority, not from separation between people and nature. Without these, the guardians are missing.

External threats add to the internal erosion of knowledge and respect for local traditional practices. Fragmentation reduces the number of plants used in remedies and rituals. Young people removed from the sites lose the knowledge of the names, prohibitions, and stories that give meaning to these practices. Recordings preserve the words, but they do not replace the care exercised by the communities.

Protecting the Kaya requires maintaining ecological integrity and cultural authority without transforming the forests into tourist attractions. Traditional management must be coordinated with public administration. This involves consulting elders, ensuring community access, and supporting the transmission of knowledge to young people. Decisions made from distant sources can erase the forest from the map and diminish its effective community function.


Forest Pharmacies


In Cameroon, forests are a pantry and a pharmacy for Baka communities. A 2024 regional survey gathered data from 2019 to 2021 from 221 households in four districts of the Eastern and Southern regions. Researchers identified 378 plant species used in traditional medicine belonging to 270 genera and 85 botanical families.

Another 2019 survey in four rural villages in Mintom documented 88 edible wild species. Among 73 participants, the inventory gathered fruits, leaves, tubers, and recipes missing from food statistics. Seventeen species, excluding as-yams not yet identified, did not appear in previous studies on the Baka. The result exposes gaps in food and nutritional inventories.

A medicinal plant is not just a species with active molecules. The knowledge includes where it grows, which part to use, in what season, how to prepare it, and who can administer it. It contains limits that prevent the destruction of the source. When exploitation strips away bark, opens roads, or eliminates mother trees, resources and essential community protocols are lost.

The destruction harms local health when clinics, medicines, and transportation are limited. This makes all traditional remedies unsafe or ineffective. Forest loss eliminates resources before they can be assessed and removes known options for families. Without the participation of the holders of these resources, research may extract information without ensuring fair benefits.

In Nigeria, the sacred grove of Osun-Osogbo preserves a similar cultural connection. The grove brings together 400 plant species, of which more than 200 have known medicinal uses. The grove hosts Yoruba worship and festivals. Its survival preserves the plants, the religious language, and the rules regarding the uses permitted by the community on each ritual occasion.


Food with Roots


On the slopes of southern Ethiopia, the Gedeo landscape showcases a cultivated forest in layers. Trees shelter the ensète, the central food crop, while coffee, roots, shrubs, and other crops occupy the lower levels. UNESCO inscribed the territory on the World Heritage List in 2023 for its agroforestry tradition maintained through indigenous knowledge and community-based land institutions.

The system does not separate the woods, the farm, and the house. The shade reduces the heat on the crops, the leaf litter returns matter to the soil, and the diversity distributes risks among the harvests. When one crop fails, others can ensure food or income. The architecture has adapted over generations to the steep terrain, the rainfall, and the diversity of the territory.

The Ballee system brings together customary laws, norms, and codes of interaction with nature. The Songo council upholds the decisions of the elders. Certain areas of the natural forest remain reserved for rituals, without the cutting of trees or cultivation. Indigenous species, medicinal plants, and megalithic monuments integrated into the Gedeo order survive there.

The Ballee and Songo institutions have lost support among some sectors of the Gedeo community. Economic and social pressures weaken it internally. The vulnerability of one layer can spread to the others: fewer trees mean less shade, soil, and water; less customary authority weakens land use rules; lower yields favor uniform crops exposed to the climate.

The disappearance of these agricultural forests would eliminate a local food technology. Planting trees alone does not restore the combination of species, rules, pruning times, and sharing methods. Restoration requires farmers, women, elders, and young people capable of continuing the learning process. Green cover can grow without restoring the system's security.


Drought Reserves


In Shinyanga, in the semi-arid north of Tanzania, the Sukuma agro-pastoralists have developed ngitili, community reserves that are closed during the rainy season and opened during the dry season. The reserve provides pasture when the surrounding fields lose vigor. It can also offer firewood, fruits, honey, medicinal plants, and materials. The method transforms these forests into an ecological reserve for difficult times.

Deforestation, degradation, commercial farming, overgrazing, and resettlement programs reduced this practice for decades and accelerated desertification in the 1980s. In 1986, the HASHI program restored the soils and vegetation. Instead of importing a ready-made solution, the program reactivated ngitili and articulated official laws with customary rules.

The recovery involved thousands of producers and improved family incomes, access to pasture, and well-being. Success depended on local ownership and coordination between the government, villages, and traditional authorities. With protection, controlled use, and local benefit, the vegetation gained social legitimacy and once again became useful during droughts.

Ngitili demonstrates how memory guides climate adaptation. The community observes rainfall, pastures, and livestock needs to reserve a plot of land. This discipline reduces exposure to drought and creates a reserve for local emergencies. Without the forest or the rules being respected, a defense is lost before the next drought and official warnings.

The lesson does not allow for the duplication of ngitili in any territory. Each practice responds to its own relationships between rain, soil, livestock, authority, and property. Restoration policies should seek mechanisms already tested by communities and adapt technical support to their rules. Without these mechanisms, the planted trees may lose their collective function.


Territories Under Pressure


In the Congo Basin, forest loss approaches villages through different pathways: small-scale agriculture, firewood, charcoal, mining, roads, fires, and conflict-related displacement. The Democratic Republic of Congo experienced a record loss of primary forest not associated with fire in 2025, despite a slight overall decrease.

For the Baka, Mbuti, and Batwa peoples, losing territory means more than just reducing the availability of timber. Hunting trails, fruit trees, rivers, ritual clearings, and places of learning are all interconnected. A road facilitates trade and services, but opens up opportunities for exploitation. With restricted access, children lose access to local education.

The loss of customary control, the disappearance of languages, and the erosion between generations threaten knowledge systems. Without territorial security, a community may have to conserve trees it no longer governs. This imbalance transforms guardians into tolerated users. It reduces the incentive to transmit rules that have no effect on access and food.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, recent programs have strengthened customary rights and local participation. Projects have supported a 250-hectare community forest concession and contributed to the 2022 law on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. In Mai-Ndombe, a plan provides for payments for emissions reductions to communities, authorities, women, and youth.

These advances may protect memory, but climate finance does not guarantee justice. The definition of beneficiaries, maps, consent, and oversight determines who gets a voice. By 2025, more than one hundred local organizations will have joined a decentralized community oversight project for REDD+.

The initiative recognizes that communities need the means to monitor forestry decisions.


Memory with Rights


Preserving these forest archives requires recognizing that traditional knowledge goes beyond the information collected. It depends on territory, language, authority, repetition, and the possibility of use. A list of plants can survive on a distant server while the community loses effective access to the forest.

A ritual can be filmed in its entirety while the sacred site is surrounded. Customary ownership and governance deserve recognition when communities legitimize them. Free, prior, and informed consent must precede research, tourism, exploration, or climate projects. Knowledge that generates revenue requires shared benefits.

Without guarantees, heritage can be celebrated while its holders face expulsion, poverty, or territorial restrictions. Rural schools and extension services can transmit knowledge within its context. Field classes, medicinal gardens, and record-keeping in local languages ​​are helpful when knowledge holders lead them.

Young people can combine science with community heritage. They can test practices and update them without reducing elders to mere cultural relics. Community protocols define who authorizes the collection of plants, recordings, visits, and research. Contracts should specify the safekeeping of records, the division of revenues, and the right to refuse future uses.

Participatory maps protect pathways, springs, and ritual forests without disclosing sensitive coordinates that could facilitate illegal exploitation or unauthorized entry. Reporting mechanisms need to function in local languages ​​and reach villages without prohibitive costs.

Women, young people, and traditional healers should participate in decisions because they use different parts of the forest. Community oversight gains strength when authorities acknowledge local evidence, respond to complaints, and publish decisions that can be challenged by communities.


Conclusion


The loss of African forests goes beyond hectares, emissions, and species. In Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, trees sustain the institutions, medicines, food, rituals, and decisions that guide the territory during crises.

Conservation does not mean freezing customs. Knowledge changes, incorporates science, and responds to new pressures when its holders retain rights, access, and decision-making power. Without these conditions, protected areas remain fragmented while the community relationships that made the forest socially habitable disappear.

The territorial choice recognizes communities as the authors of solutions, not mere figures in external projects. Where memory, forest, and authority remain linked, communities overcome droughts, diseases, and scarcity with their own resources. Disruption reduces health, food sovereignty, and climate adaptation.
