TIJ: Türkiye Joins South Africa Against Israel
Turkey will ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa's case against Israel for violating the Genocide Convention, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan revealed today.
The minister indicated that Turkey will submit a request on Wednesday to join the process formulated by South Africa in December 2023 against Israel due to its military offensive in the Gaza Strip, where according to local authorities, more than 39.600 Palestinians have already been killed.
Fidan, who is in Cairo, Egypt's capital, where he met with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdulati, stressed that those who "unconditionally" support Israel are primarily responsible for the breakdown of the international order, the Anatolia news agency reported.
In May, the Turkish minister had already announced in a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, that Ankara would join the request presented by South Africa, although the process had not been formalized at the time.
Today, the Health Ministry of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip announced a new death toll of 39.623 in the Palestinian territory since the start of the war with Israel about ten months ago.
At least 40 people have been killed in the past 24 hours, the ministry added in a statement, in addition to 91.469 injured in the Gaza Strip since the invasion began on October 07.
