BAL 2024: Petro de Luanda Heading to the Final
Petro de Luanda secured its presence in the final of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) after yesterday achieving an exciting victory over the Town Tigers of South Africa, by 96-86, at the BK Arena in Kigali, in a competition taking place in Rwanda.
The Angolan team demonstrated determination and skill throughout the game, securing victory in extra time, sealing their place in the final of the fourth edition of the BAL and advancing to fight for the title, on Saturday, against Al Ahly of Libya.
Intense Game Against Cape Town Tigers
The match between Petro de Luanda and Cape Town Tigers, held at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, began with a balanced performance. Petro coach Sergio Valdeolmillos opted for a different starting five, consisting of Gerson Domingos, Gerson Gonçalves "Lukeny," Glofate Buiamba, Abubakar Gakou, and Yanick Moreira.
The Angolan team started the game with good laboratory plays, but the South Africans adjusted their strategy and won the first quarter 15-16. In the second quarter, led by American point guard Nicholas Faust, Petro managed to open a ten-point lead, closing the period at 43-37.
The third quarter continued to favor Petro, who increased the lead to 66-55. However, in the final quarter, the Cape Town Tigers recovered and managed to tie the score at 77-77, forcing overtime.
During overtime, Gerson Gonçalves "Lukeny" scored a decisive three-pointer, followed by points from Jone Pedro and Nicholas Faust, solidifying Petro de Luanda's 96-86 victory. Faust led the way with 23 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists, followed by Gerson Gonçalves with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Preparation for the BAL Grand Final
With this victory, Petro de Luanda advanced to the BA final, where they will face Al Ahly de Benghazi of Libya. Al Ahly eliminated Rivers Hoopers of Nigeria in the other semifinal, also after extra time, with a score of 89-83. This will be Petro's second time reaching the final of the event, the first being in 2022.
Petro coach Sergio Valdeolmillos emphasized the importance of preparation and strategy for the decisive match. The final is scheduled for Saturday at 15:00 PM and promises to be a thrilling duel between two of the continent's best teams.
