The Oldest Mother in Africa Is 70 Years Old. This extraordinary feat was just announced minutes ago (17:00 – 30:11:2023). In Uganda, Safinah Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman, gave birth to twins after in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

The Women's Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC) celebrated this event not only as a medical triumph, but also as a remarkable testament to human capability.

The birth took place by cesarean section at the WHI&FC fertility center, located in the capital of Uganda, in the capital, Kampala. Mrs. Namukwaya, became one of the oldest women in the world to give birth, having been congratulated by the hospital who told the local media that it was a “miracle".

Africa's Oldest Mother

The Women's Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC) released the exciting news on their Facebook page, describing the event as “achieving the extraordinary”. The birth took place on Wednesday, shortly after noon, and both mother and babies are in good health, as reported by the hospital.

Namukwaya, now recognized as Africa's oldest mother, gave birth to a boy and a girl by caesarean section, surprising everyone at the fertility center in Kampala. Ms. Namukwaya shared with the local media that she considers this birth a true “miracle".

Namukwaya, the doting mother, faced significant challenges during her pregnancy, including abandonment by her partner when he discovered she was expecting twins. In an interview with Uganda Daily Monitor, she shared the emotional difficulty of her journey, revealing that her partner has never visited her since she was hospitalized.

“Men don’t like being told that they are pregnant with more than one child. Since I was admitted here, my man never showed up,” she said.

This is not the first time Namukwaya has become a mother; in 2020, she gave birth to a baby girl. Motivated by the desire to have children, she shared that she felt ridiculed for not having a family of her own to take care of her in her old age.

Although it is not clear whether Safinah Namukwaya, to become a mother again, used a donated egg or one of her own, previously frozen when she was younger, in vitro fertilization (IVF) was crucial to realizing this dream. With menopause typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55, advances in medicine, such as IVF, have made it possible for women to give birth, even at older ages.

Conclusion

The remarkable case of Safinah Namukwaya highlights not only the evolution of reproductive medicine, but also the extraordinary determination that drove this 70-year-old mother to achieve what many consider impossible.

Her story demonstrates the importance of in vitro fertilization as a viable option for women who wish to fulfill their dream of motherhood at an older age and be able to be mothers again. The Women's Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC) celebrates not just a medical success, but the remarkable capacity of the human spirit in the face of unique and innovative challenges.
