ToggleBAD: 60 Years Making a Difference in Africa
The African Development Bank (BAD) celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of significant impact on Africa's socioeconomic development. This milestone was celebrated on September 9 and 10, 2024, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, the city that has hosted the institution's headquarters since its founding in 1964.
Under the theme "60 Years Making a Difference", the celebration aimed to reflect on the AfDB's journey, from its establishment to its vision for the future of the African continent.
The celebration also provided an opportunity to recognize the AfDB's pivotal role in Africa's transformation, highlighting achievements, challenges, and future goals to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth for generations to come.
60 Years Transforming Africa
Since its inception, the AfDB has been a key player in advancing the economic and social development of the African continent. Founded on September 10, 1964, the Bank was established with the objective of promoting economic progress, investment in infrastructure, and combating existing inequalities among African nations.
The theme “60 Years Making a Difference” reflects the AfDB’s ongoing impact across all regions of Africa, focusing on its five strategic priorities, known as “High 5s”: Feed Africa, Light and Electrify Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa and Improve the Quality of Life of Africans.
These priorities are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union's Agenda 2063, aiming for resilient and sustainable development for the entire continent.
The Anniversary Celebrations
The AfDB's 60th anniversary celebrations began on September 9th with an event dedicated to the institution's employees. This event featured cultural presentations, discussions on the Bank's evolution and institutional influence, as well as exhibitions and symposia focused on engaging local communities, including students, young innovators and entrepreneurs, and members of civil society.
The main day, September 10, highlighted the AfDB's milestones and achievements over the past six decades. Ivorian government leaders, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and members of several international organizations joined the Bank's staff and leadership to celebrate this historic moment.
A 60-Year Legacy
Since its inception, the AfDB has financed more than 6.500 projects across Africa, directly impacting the lives of more than 400 million people in the last seven years alone. The Bank has worked tirelessly to overcome economic inequalities and promote inclusive and sustainable development in all regions of the continent.
Through its various initiatives, the AfDB has supported the implementation of projects in areas such as infrastructure, energy, health, education and agriculture.
One of the most recent examples of its impact is its support for Africa's electrification initiatives, a priority established within its strategy “Illuminate and Electrify Africa"This program aims to provide universal access to electricity, which is essential for the continent's economic and social development.
The future
Despite its many achievements, the AfDB continues to face considerable challenges in its efforts to transform Africa. These challenges include growing economic inequality, climate change, and the political and security crises affecting several African countries.
The Bank has taken innovative approaches to addressing these issues, working closely with local governments, international partners, and the private sector to ensure sustainable solutions.
During the celebrations, Akinwumi Adesina, President of the AfDB, highlighted the importance of the Bank's staff at all levels, stating that their commitment is crucial to the success of the institution's operations. Adesina also highlighted the AfDB's role as a facilitator of Africa's development.
“You are part of Africa’s transformation.”
“For each project, the entire Bank ecosystem contributes to the development of the continent,” he said.
Innovative Initiatives
One of the initiatives announced during the 60th anniversary celebrations was the launch of the Youth Community of Practice (Y-CoP), a knowledge platform aimed at young people in Africa and other parts of the world.
This initiative aims to foster critical thinking, peer-to-peer learning, and the identification of innovative, evidence-based solutions to support sustainable growth in Africa. Y-CoP seeks to engage young people in intergenerational dialogues on inclusive development, focusing on areas such as youth entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and leadership.
By preparing young people to actively participate in creating solutions to the challenges facing Africa, the AfDB reaffirms its commitment to promoting equitable and sustainable development for future generations.
Conclusion
With 60 years of history, the AfDB continues to be a driving force in advancing the continent's development. Over the coming decades, the Bank is committed to intensifying its efforts to meet future challenges, remaining true to its mandate of promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
The AfDB's 60th anniversary celebration was more than a commemoration of past achievements; it was a moment to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that still lie ahead.
