Angola's GDP grows 3,6% over the next 5 years.
The Minister of Economy and Planning of Angola, His Excellency Mário Caetano João, announced that the country is expected to see an average growth of 3,6% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) between 2023 and 2027.
This increase is mainly due to the positive performance of the Angolan oil sector. In this article, we will analyze Angola's economic outlook, the factors driving growth, and the role of economic reforms and private investment.
The Oil Sector
The oil sector is expected to grow by an average of 1% during the period 2023 to 2027, while the non-oil sector is expected to grow by 4,6%. However, declining oil production and reduced fiscal momentum may dampen Angola's economic growth in 2023, falling short of projected population growth of 3,1%.
Recent discoveries in the country have attracted more investment to Angola's oil sector. ExxonMobil, one of the largest companies in the sector, discovered 30 meters of high-quality sandstone containing hydrocarbons. Furthermore, TotalEnergies announced its intention to invest $3 billion in projects related to oil exploration in Angola.
Economic Reforms
The economic reforms implemented over the past five years have enabled Angola to improve macroeconomic management and public sector governance. Economic stability is supported by a more flexible exchange rate regime, central bank autonomy, investment-friendly monetary policies, and fiscal consolidation with a broadening of the tax base.
These measures promote greater participation of the private sector in the Angolan economy, increasing financial stability and reducing the impact of volatility in the oil sector.
The World Bank points out that, in order to transform its economy towards a more sustainable and inclusive model, Angola needs a strong political commitment to modernize and diversify its state economy.
Upcoming natural gas and renewable energy projects offer diversification opportunities, allowing the Angolan economy to grow with sustainable energy.
Angola Oil & Gas 2023
Angola's economic outlook, demand and supply trends in oil markets and diversification efforts will be discussed at the country's main energy event, Angola Oil & Gas 2023 (AOG 2023).
Organized by Energy Capital & Power , AOG 2023 will bring together African energy and oil ministers, global investors, opinion leaders, market analysts, entrepreneurs, project managers and service companies to discuss the future of Angolan energy.
AOG 2023, in partnership with the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas of the Republic of Angola and the national oil company Sonangol, will be an ideal platform for global and sectoral discussions, as well as the signing of agreements that will shape Angola's future energy trajectory .
Conclusion
Angola faces significant challenges in the pursuit of sustainable and inclusive economic growth. However, the prospects for a 3,6% growth in GDP between 2023 and 2027, driven by the oil sector and the attraction of investments, are a positive sign.
The economic reforms implemented in recent years and the growing participation of the private sector in the Angolan economy contribute to greater financial stability.
Even so, it is essential that the country continues to invest in economic diversification and in the promotion of sustainable energies, such as natural gas and renewable energies. The AOG 2023 event will be an opportunity for the country to discuss and outline strategies for Angola's energy and economic future.
