New Evidence of Israel's Genocide in Gaza
New evidence of Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip was handed over today by South Africa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), based in The Hague, the Presidency of the South African Republic announced.
“According to court rules, the memorial cannot be made public.”
“The unveiling of this memorial comes at a time when Israel is escalating its killing of civilians in Gaza and now appears intent on following a similar path of destruction in Lebanon.”
Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya added that South Africa filed the case in December 2023 with the UN's highest judicial body, accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and asking the court to order Israel to end its attacks.
Pretoria indicated that the legal action culminated today in the registration of this “memorial”, stating that “documents how the Israeli government violated the Genocide Convention by promoting the destruction of Palestinians living in Gaza".
According to Magwenya, the evidence is detailed in over 750 pages of text, supported by examples and annexes of over 4.000 pages.
The Presidency of the South African Republic considered that the “devastation" it's the "Suffering” of the Palestinian people in Gaza were possible only because, despite the recommendations of the ICJ and numerous actions and interventions by UN bodies, Israel “failed to fulfill its international obligations".
The spokesperson for the South African Presidency stressed that “the Palestinian struggle against imperialism, Israeli apartheid and settler colonialism is the daily reality of the Palestinian people".
Vincent Magwenya stressed that “South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice is a comprehensive presentation of the overwhelming evidence of genocide in Gaza".
Several countries, including Turkey, Nicaragua, Spain, Mexico, Libya and Colombia, joined the case, which began public hearings in January.
Following this initiative, the ICJ imposed provisional measures on Israel in January under the genocide convention, demanding that Tel Aviv report its compliance within a month, in order to prevent any act of genocide in the small Palestinian enclave.
In May, the same court ordered an end to the Israeli military offensive in the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
The conflict in Gaza was triggered in retaliation for the attack carried out on October 07, 2023, by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in territory occupied by Israel, which killed more than 1.200 people, mostly civilians, and where around 250 others were taken hostage.
Israel retaliated with a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip that has already left more than 42 dead on the ground, also mostly civilians, the vast majority of whom are women and children, according to local authorities and UN personnel on the ground.
The war has now spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a strong attack in September against the territory occupied by Hezbollah, having, however, already exceeded that territory and attacked Lebanon directly, including its capital Beirut, with no justification for this other than their conviction that they are the masters of the world and the only ones who are right.
