Mozambique: Daúde Amade Wins Literary Prize
Mozambican essayist, poet, storyteller and writer Daúde Amade is the winner of the 8th edition of the National Press/Eugénio Lisboa Prize with the work Rogilda, or Breviário de Agonia.
Daúde Amade was born in Maputo in 1993. He is an essayist, sometimes a storyteller, and sometimes a poet. He studied philosophy and history at the Pedagogical University of Maputo and Mozambican literature at Eduardo Mondlane University.
He was awarded 2nd Place in the Gala-Gala Poetry Prize (2020). He participated in both volumes of the anthology “An Experimental Christmas and Other Stories(Gala-Gala Editions, 2021 and 2022). His texts, spread across a variety of genres, have been published in anthologies, blogs, and magazines in Mozambique, Brazil, and Portugal.
Through Gala-Gala Edições/Livros, Daúde Amade will publish the book of essays "Rap as Art and Philosophy – Aesthetic Cartographies in the Mozambican Context." The work will be part of the "Our People, Our Language" collection.
The National Press-Casa da Moeda (INCM), fulfilling its mission of promoting and preserving the Portuguese language and taking into account the relevance of Eugénio Lisboa, as a citizen and man of culture born in Mozambique, but also as its author, decided to create this literary prize, aimed at selecting unpublished works of great quality in the field of literary prose, thus encouraging Mozambican literary creation.
All Mozambican citizens (residing in Mozambique or abroad) or foreign citizens residing in Mozambique for at least 5 years are eligible to apply.
In addition to the monetary value, the Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Prize also includes the publication of the winning work by INCM.
It should be noted that for this edition the honorable mention went to Jeremias Macaringue with the work “Na Boca do Hipopótamo”.
Previously, the award was won by Fátima Taquidir (2023) with the work “Disruption” (7th Edition); Jofredino Faife (2022) with the work “Puppet Theater or Essay on the Descriptive Mechanics of the Desertification of Men” (6th Edition); Mélio Tinga with the work “Marizza” (4th Edition); in 2019, the winner of the award was the writer Sérgio Raimundo with the work “The Island of the Mulatos”.
In 2018, writer and playwright Aurélio Furdela with the work “Saga d'Ouro” (2nd Edition) and Pedro Pereira Lopes won the 1st Edition of the prestigious award with the work “Gente Grave” (2017).
