Despite some surprises in the opening game, Ivory Coast maintained control, securing a solid victory in the CAN 2023 opener.

The 2023 African Cup of Nations (CAN 2023), kicked off yesterday, January 13, 2023, with the opening game to be held between the host country and Guinea-Bissau.

Ivory Coast started well and shone in their debut, providing their fans with a convincing victory over Guinea-Bissau. But if Guinea-Bissau disappointed, on the contrary, the Elephants (Ivory Coast) were perfect and won a 2-0 victory, launching the start of their campaign in this prestigious competition.

The opening ceremony of the 34th edition of CAN 2023, which preceded the inaugural game, took place in the presence of president Alassane Ouattara, accompanied by his counterpart from Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The show took place at the Ebimpé stadium, in a bustling atmosphere surrounded by glitter and sequins, while the spectators, dressed in orange, participated enthusiastically by singing the official song of CAN 2023, to the sound of the group Magic System and watched choreographies celebrating culture national and some infrastructures built for the event.

 

Palpable Pressure

As soon as the opening game began, there was palpable pressure on the shoulders of the Ivorian players, tasked with opening CAN 2023 at home, at the Alassane Ouattara d’Ebimpé stadium. The Elephants faced the challenge with seriousness and determination, ensuring an unquestionable victory against Guinea-Bissau.

Seko Fofana stood out quickly, scoring a spectacular goal in the 4th minute, bringing immediate relief to his team. A masterful move that saw Fofana forcefully penetrate the opponent's defense before finishing masterfully past Djoco. This opening goal set the tone for Ivorian dominance, with Fofana almost doubling the score had it not been for Djoco's deflection off the bar in the 34th minute.

Despite the opportunities missed by Krasso and Singo in the first half, the striker redeemed himself magnificently in the second half of the game. A sublime movement, combining a hat and an acrobatic finish in the 58th minute, allowed Krasso to score the second goal, consolidating the Elephants' lead.

In the second half, the Ivorian defense was surprised several times by the Guineans. In the 73rd minute, Yahia Fofana, the Elefantes goalkeeper, was forced to intervene to intercept a shot from Franculino Djú, who had just entered the game and made a crucial intervention in the 76th minute, avoiding the 3-0 after a shot from Kessié. .

Despite the surprises in the second half, Ivory Coast maintained control, securing a solid victory in the CAN 2023 debut, positioning the Elephants at the top of the group, putting pressure on their opponents in the competition. The next challenge will be against Nigeria, scheduled for Thursday, January 18th, at 17pm GMT.

 

The Other Games

Meanwhile, today, on the second day of CAN 2023, the games between Egypt and Mozambique (2-2) and Nigeria against Equatorial Guinea (1-1) were played, with the game between Ghana and Cape Town still missing. Green that will be held after the close of this edition.

Tomorrow we will have games between Senegal and Gambia, between Cameroon and Guinea-Conakry and the expected game between Algeria and Angola.
