The UN Calls for Urgent Peace in Somalia.
In a world marked by conflict, Somalia has become the focus of attention for the United Nations Security Council.
The UN, the highest entity of global governance, has expressed concern about the volatile situation in the African country, calling for an urgent ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of security forces from Somaliland.
Appeal for peace in Somalia
The UN Security Council has clearly expressed its position by reaffirming respect for Somalia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity. His main concern is the ongoing violence in Las Anod, a region in northern Somalia. The conflict resulted in a high number of civilian casualties and displaced more than 150.000 people.
The UN has welcomed the initiatives and efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ethiopia and local leaders to contain hostility and promote an inclusive national dialogue.
Security Council members called on all parties involved to agree to an urgent ceasefire and peaceful conflict resolution. In addition, the UN encouraged the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia to provide further support as per its mandate.
Condemning Violence in Somalia
The UN did not hesitate to condemn the protests repressed by the Somaliland security forces and the acts of violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure. An appeal was made for the immediate withdrawal of security forces from Somaliland and for restraint by all concerned.
The UN Security Council finalized its message with a request addressed to all donors to increase humanitarian aid and essential assistance to the region.
Somalia has been in a state of war since 1991, after the overthrow of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
