The Government of Malabo announced today that Pope Leo XIV will visit Equatorial Guinea in 2026 on his first trip to Africa since his election to the papacy. This visit will be historic as it is only the second time a Pope has visited the country.

"The visit of Pope Leo XIV to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea has been confirmed."

He wrote the Government on its official page, without mentioning dates. The only pontiff to visit Equatorial Guinea was John Paul II, in February 1982.

The President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, met on Friday with the president of the National Conference of Bishops and leaders of the Catholic Church to coordinate preparations for the Pope's visit.

"Equatorial Guinea is accustomed to receiving dignitaries, so the population will be mobilized to offer the Holy Father the grand reception he deserves.".

The head of state stated this, as quoted in the government's press release. The visit follows the visit to the Vatican by the President of Equatorial Guinea, accompanied by his wife, to greet Pope Leo XIV after his election, renewing an official invitation to visit Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea has a Christian population that is over 90%, according to a 2015 census. Since its independence from Spain in 1968, Equatorial Guinea – a member country of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) – has been considered by human rights organizations to be one of the most repressive and corrupt countries in the world.

Obiang, 83, has ruled the country firmly since 1979, when he overthrew his uncle, Francisco Macias, in a coup, making him the longest-serving president in the world.

Pope Leo XIV's visit to Equatorial Guinea, in addition to its religious significance, could bring greater visibility to the human rights situation and governance in the country.

International media attention could positively influence the dialogue between the government and civil society, promoting reforms and improvements in the living conditions of the population. It remains to be seen whether this historic event will have a lasting impact on the future of Equatorial Guinea.

Conclusion

The announced visit of Pope Leo XIV to Equatorial Guinea is a highly symbolic event in a country where the majority of the population identifies with Christianity, but where profound challenges persist in terms of governance and fundamental rights.

Beyond the pastoral and spiritual dimension, this trip could project the country to the center of the international gaze, creating a context conducive to scrutiny and dialogue on political, social, and human issues long raised by independent organizations.

The presence of the Holy Father could act as a catalyst for internal and external expectations, both among authorities and civil society. It remains to be seen whether this historic moment will translate into concrete signs of openness and change, or whether it will remain limited to its ceremonial value in a country marked by decades of concentrated power.
