CAN 2027: Ghana in Group C with strong rivals

The draw has placed Ghana and Ivory Coast on the same path towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, in a group where history, pride and competitive pressure promise to weigh heavily from the first matchday.

CAN 2027: Ghana in Group C with strong rivals

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has pitted Ghana against tough rivals even before the tournament begins. The qualifying draw, held in Cairo, placed Ghana in Group C with Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Somalia, one of the most attractive groups in the African race for the tournament that will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The Ghanaian Football Federation has confirmed the inclusion of the Black Stars in this group, where Ivory Coast emerges as the most historically and competitively significant opponent. The team, coached by Carlos Queiroz, enters the campaign with four continental titles, the last one won in 1982, and with the need to regain authority after recent periods marked by inconsistency.

Ivory Coast retains a high status on the continent and brings together players accustomed to demanding leagues. Gambia is no longer seen as merely a decorative presence, and Somalia will seek to transform each game into an opportunity for growth.

The draw also determined the path for the Portuguese-speaking teams. Angola was placed in Group B with Egypt, Malawi, and South Sudan.

Mozambique was placed in Group J with Senegal, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Guinea-Bissau will face Nigeria, Tanzania, and Madagascar in Group L. Cape Verde will compete in Group K with Mali, Rwanda, and Liberia.

Weight Group

Group C brings together tradition, rivalry, and competitive risk in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana and Ivory Coast carry strong memories of the Africa Cup of Nations, not only for the titles they have won, but for the way their clashes often expose generations, styles, and ambitions.

The presence of Gambia increases uncertainty, while Somalia enters without the same status, but with room to alter the situation within a short timeframe. Carlos Queiroz knows that the margin for error will be small.

The qualifying format grants places to the top two teams from each group, with a special rule for the host nation's groups, turning every away game into a test of maturity. Ghana has tradition, a demanding public, and players in strong leagues, but also carries the pressure of recent results falling short of expectations.

Ivory Coast emerges as a direct rival in the fight for the lead. The encounter between the two teams should set the emotional temperature of the series, because both have enough history to refuse a qualification achieved by minimal calculations. Gambia, more competitive in recent years, will try to take advantage of any hesitation from the favorites to enter the race for the spots.

For Somalia, the draw represents an opportunity for international exposure and learning in a demanding context. Even without the historical weight of their opponents, the Somali team can influence the outcome if they make their games physical, tight, and difficult. In African qualifiers, favorites rarely win based solely on their name.

Emotional management will be just as important as technical quality. An away draw might protect the campaign, but an unexpected defeat alters priorities and requires quick reactions. Therefore, Ghana will have to combine possession, defensive discipline, and effectiveness in the penalty areas to avoid decisive setbacks early on.

Portuguese-speaking people paying attention.

Angola will face a demanding task in Group B of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where they will face Egypt, Malawi, and South Sudan. The presence of Egypt makes the series particularly difficult, as the Pharaohs remain the most decorated team in the history of the competition, with seven titles.

For the Palancas Negras (Angola's national football team), the campaign will require consistency at home and the ability to score points away. Mozambique, coached by Chiquinho Conde, was placed in Group J with Senegal, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

The draw gives the Mambas a top-tier opponent right from the start, but it also leaves open a realistic battle for the second spot. The Mozambican national team has grown in competitiveness and knows that campaigns of this level are often decided by effectiveness in matches against direct rivals.

Guinea-Bissau will face a highly competitive group. Nigeria starts as the natural favorite in Group L, but Tanzania and Madagascar are opponents capable of causing problems for any team. The Djurtus will need organization, defensive balance, and better offensive efficiency to qualify for the final stage again.

Cape Verde finds itself in a group where Mali starts with a high status, although Rwanda and Liberia also present strong contenders. The Cape Verdean team arrives at this stage with accumulated respect and a generation accustomed to competing abroad, a factor that could weigh heavily in a long qualifying round. São Tomé and Príncipe, on the other hand, was eliminated in the pre-qualifying round against Ethiopia.

The Portuguese-speaking teams are thus entering a race that will require careful management of squads, travel, and moments of pressure. The difference may lie in their ability to turn balanced games into points.

Eastern Route

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will have special significance for African football as it takes the final stage to East Africa. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, between June 19 and July 17, 2027, in a format that confirms the geographical expansion of the continent's main national team competition.

The choice of East Africa expands the symbolic map of the tournament. For decades, the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) had a greater organizational presence in North, West, and Central Africa. The 2027 edition focuses on a region with a strong passion for football, but which is still seeking to consolidate infrastructure, attract sporting investment, and strengthen its presence in African national team football.

The tournament also comes after a previous edition marked by strong administrative controversy. The final initially ended with Senegal winning 1-0 over Morocco after extra time, with a goal by Pape Gueye. Later, CAF reversed the result and awarded the title to Morocco by administrative decision, due to the temporary departure of Senegalese players from the pitch during the match.

This episode places the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations under greater institutional scrutiny. African football enters a new campaign filled with talent, rivalries, and passionate fans, but also with the need to protect the credibility of its competitions. The qualifying phase will be the first test of this balance.

For the host countries, the requirement will be twofold. In addition to preparing stadiums, access routes, and support services, they will have to demonstrate political and operational coordination. Shared organization can strengthen the region, provided that the commitments made are rigorously fulfilled before the arrival of the teams, fans, and international press to the event.

Conclusion

The draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations didn't decide on any absolute favorites, but it did outline risky paths for several African teams. Ghana will have to confirm its status against Ivory Coast, Angola will face the historical weight of Egypt again, Mozambique will take on Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau will once again face a Nigeria accustomed to big stages.

For Cape Verde, Group K presents challenges, but also room for ambition. Each matchday could alter priorities and force traditional contenders to prove, on the field, the value that the draw only suggests.
