Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Kicks Off With Emotion and Surprises

Africa Cup of Nations 2025 began as is typical of African football: excitement until the very last minute, favorites under pressure, and results that immediately show that nothing will be predictable in this Moroccan edition.

Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Kicks Off With Emotion and Surprises

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations officially kicked off on Sunday in Rabat, with hosts Morocco opening the tournament against Comoros.

The first round of the group stage confirmed what is most characteristic of African football: high intensity, games decided by details, and a competitive balance that transforms each match into a tactical and emotional battle.

Between the host nation's relief at winning against Comoros, the drama experienced by Mali against Zambia with a draw in stoppage time, and Angola's bitter defeat against South Africa, in a game where the Palancas Negras paid dearly for the physical exhaustion of the first half, the first games of the competition left clear signs that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will not make things easy for anyone.

The opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations pitted Morocco against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in an atmosphere of great expectation where the favoritism of the Atlas Lions only materialized in the second half, ending 2-0. The first half was marked by nervousness, excessive anxiety and difficulties in finishing.

The most symbolic moment came just 11 minutes in, when Sofiane Rahimi missed a penalty, increasing the anxiety in the stands. Comoros, organized and disciplined, managed to hold the score at 0-0 until halftime, also benefiting from some Moroccan haste.

After the break, the team coached by Walid Regragui showed greater maturity, and their superior technique ultimately made the difference. Brahim Díaz opened the scoring in the 55th minute, emotionally unlocking the home team. The second goal came in the 74th minute through Ayoub El Kaabi, helping to consolidate control of the game and confirming a 2-0 victory.

The relief was visible at the end, in a debut marked more by tension than brilliance. It was a fair victory, albeit less comfortable than many predicted, allowing Morocco to start the tournament with three points, but also with the awareness that it will be necessary to improve its performance.

With this result, Morocco takes the lead in Group A, also benefiting from the draw between Mali and Zambia, reinforcing its status as one of the main contenders for the continental title.

In the second match of the day, Mali and Zambia played out a balanced duel, with several incidents and a dramatic ending. The first half was marked by caution and a missed penalty by El Bilal Touré in the 42nd minute, which could have given Mali the lead before halftime.

In the second half, Mali managed to score in the 61st minute through Lassine Sinayoko and seemed to be heading towards an important victory in Group A. However, Zambia did not give up and was rewarded in stoppage time.

In the 90+2 minute, Patson Daka appeared at the right moment to make it 1-1, completely silencing the Mali fans and thus rescuing a precious point. The result confirms the balance of Group A and leaves everything open for the next rounds.

Angola Falls on Premiere

In Group B, Angola suffered a 2-1 defeat against South Africa in a match played in Marrakech, which left mixed signals regarding the performance of the Palancas Negras (Angola's national team).

The Angolan team started the game well, taking the initiative in the opening minutes and coming close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute with a dangerous shot from captain Fredy, which was saved with difficulty by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. However, the efficiency was on the South African side's side.

In the 21st minute, Oswin Appollis took advantage of a cross into the area, took an opponent out of the way and finished with a low shot near the post, giving Hugo Marques no chance. Angola reacted with character and equalized in the 35th minute, when Show flicked a free kick from the side taken by Fredy with his heel, in a moment of collective inspiration.

In the second half, physical fatigue began to take its toll. South Africa pushed up the field, pressed more intensely, and exploited the spaces in the central corridor. In the 79th minute, Lyle Foster, Burnley's forward, took advantage of some defensive passivity and scored a beautiful goal from just outside the area, sealing the final result.

Despite the defeat, Angola showed positive signs, especially in the organization of the first half, but will have to correct flaws in concentration and physical management to keep its ambitions of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations intact.

Next decisive match

With their victory over Angola, South Africa starts Group B with a win and awaits the outcome of the match between Egypt and Zimbabwe. Angola, in turn, is already under pressure to score points in the second round, where they face Zimbabwe in a game scheduled for December 26th.

Remember that the top two teams from each group qualify for the next phase, as well as the four best third-placed teams, which keeps all teams still in the running, despite the initial setbacks.

Africa Cup of Nations 2025 promises, from the outset, an intense and balanced group stage with no room for prolonged errors, confirming that African football continues to grow in competitiveness and unpredictability.

CAN 2025 Unpredictable

The first round of matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations confirmed that, despite being favorites, no team enters the field with guaranteed victories. Morocco won, but struggled. Mali let a win slip away in the final moments. Angola showed competitiveness, but paid dearly for some details.

These initial results reinforce the idea that the tournament will be decided by consistency, emotional management, and effectiveness in key moments.

Conclusion

With only three matches played and a fourth currently underway, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has already begun to write a narrative of balance and competitive tension. The host nation's victory provides momentary tranquility, but does not dispel doubts. The draw between Mali and Zambia and Angola's defeat show that every point will be earned with maximum effort.

As the group stage progresses, the margin for error shrinks and the pressure mounts. If the first matchday is any indication, this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations promises to be long, intense, and full of twists and turns.
