With a contract with Swangz Avenue, despite facing initial skepticism and criticism, she rose to the stars to become one of Uganda's most celebrated female artists, where she has already left an indelible mark on the country's music scene.
After having had a series of hits in 2023 and having collaborated with most of the biggest names in Ugandan music, he is now preparing to leave his mark in this new year of 2024.
The Creation of Vinka
Born Nakiyingi Veronica Luggya on June 27, 1994, Vinka's journey into the music industry has not been without obstacles. Before making a name for herself as a singer, she graduated in tourism from Makerere University and emerged in the entertainment industry as a dancer for artists such as Maurice Kirya, Cindy and Jackie Chandiru.
“I did this for three years. I learned that we, as human beings, are not easy to manage. In this job we have to put all our emotions aside anyway,” she said.
She began working as an intern at Swangz Avenue, one of Kampala's leading audio and film production companies, rising within the company to become manager of renowned artists such as Irene Ntale and Winnie Nwagi. In late 2016, Swangz Avenue encouraged Vinka to become a singer.
Seizing the opportunity, he signed a contract in February 2017 and released the single “Level”. Since then, she has consistently dominated the Ugandan music charts, with hits such as “Malaika”, “Chips Na Ketchup” and “Overdose”. Switching from businesswoman to singer, she faced a lot of skepticism and her detractors dismissed her vocal abilities, claiming she sounds like a man.
“People who knew me as an artistic manager said I was better as a manager, they said – she can’t sing, she looks like a man with that deep voice”, she stated.
However, her resilience and self-confidence helped her develop an indestructible barrier capable of facing such criticism. Overcoming these challenges, she became a force to be reckoned with, producing several hits and collaborating with some of the biggest names in Ugandan music.
Vinka's Musical Evolution
One of the distinctive aspects of the Ugandan music scene is the collaborative spirit among female artists. Vinka, too, embraced this trend, collaborating with other artists like Winnie Nwaji and Karole Kasiita. The music video for “Chekecha” received four million views on YouTube in just five months.
Another notable collaboration was with Romanian artist Inna, resulting in a fusion of French, Kiswahili and English titled “Bebe”, with an impressive 26 million views on YouTube to date. Vinka's versatility was a key element of her success.
“We decided to do a song in French with a little Kiswahili and English. I went to Romania, it was a very beautiful experience.”
“My music is spreading to different markets, so I must be doing something right,” said Vinka.
From her breakthrough single “Stylo” with Irene Ntale to recent hits like “Bailando” and the beautiful romantic ballad “Believe” with Dax Vibes, Vinka has demonstrated her ability to comfortably navigate diverse musical genres.
Her captivating performances, bold live shows and commitment to pushing artistic boundaries have endeared her to fans, cementing her presence on Uganda's music playlists. The year 2023 marked a significant chapter in Vinka's career. Songs like “Tutu Mama” with Elijah Kitaka and the collaboration “Chekecha” highlighted her continued musical mastery.
However, the most notable song was the enchanting “Believe” featuring Dax Vibes which has maintained its top position since its release. Vinka's hard work and dedication have been duly recognized, solidifying her status as one of the most successful women in the Ugandan music scene.
