Venomous snake forces plane to crash landing.

A South African pilot experienced an unexpected scare during a flight between the cities of Bloemfontein and Pretoria, when he discovered that a highly venomous snake was in the cockpit.

Rudolph Erasmus, who was piloting a private plane with four passengers, felt something cold slide down his back before he came across the yellow snake under his seat. The reptile in question was a Cape Cobra (Naja nivea), whose bite can be fatal in just 30 minutes.

Despite the risk to his life, Erasmus remained calm and managed to land the plane safely in the city of Welkom, South Africa. The pilot reported that at first he thought that the feeling of cold on his back was water that had spilled over

“I realized it was something else and I didn't move,” he said.

When he turned to the left and looked down, he realized it was a snake slithering down his back.

Erasmus saw the snake descend behind the bench and reported only the presence of a “unwanted crew member” to the passengers, not wanting to cause panic, but he later confessed the truth and made an emergency landing at the nearest airport. Despite the scare, the passengers remained calm and everyone left unharmed.

An aviation specialist and a firefighter were called in to help and try to rescue the animal, which has not yet been located. Poppy Khosa, the South African Civil Aviation Commissioner, hailed Erasmus as a hero.

“This could have been disastrous. Great pilot, in fact he saved all the lives on board”.

“Such an incredible story and a great handling of the situation,” she declared.

Employees of the Worcester Aviation Club, from where the plane took off, they had seen the snake seeking refuge under the plane, but they did not realize that it had entered the plane.

After the plane landed, they searched for the snake, but to no avail.
