Rising Hunger in Africa: A Global Challenge.

Hunger is a persistent problem across the world, and nowhere is this reality felt more acutely than the African continent. With one in five people going hungry, Africa is the region most affected by the scourge of hunger in the world. The United Nations (ONU) estimate that 735 million people are victims of this terrible situation.

The Escalation of Hunger in Africa

Africa is a diverse continent, rich in natural resources, but it is also home to an alarming reality: widespread hunger.

According to the report “State of Food and Nutrition Security in the World 2023“, published by the UN, more than 37% of the African population faces food insecurity. This means that approximately one in five people are struggling daily to access adequate food to support their basic nutritional needs.

In 2022, the situation worsened in all sub-regions of the continent. North Africa saw an increase of 2,4 million people facing severe food insecurity compared to the previous year.

In Central Africa, this number increased by 4,8 million, while in Southern and West Africa there were increases of 1,1 million and 3,6 million respectively. These data clearly demonstrate that hunger is a growing challenge that needs to be tackled urgently.

Causes and Consequences of Hunger in Africa

Hunger in Africa is the result of a complex combination of factors. Armed conflicts, climate crises and socio-economic impacts, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, have contributed to the current food crisis.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and other regional conflicts have a direct effect on the availability of nutritious food and healthy diets. Environmental degradation, climate change and economic instability also play a significant role in pushing people to the edge of food security.

The impacts of famine in Africa are profound and pervasive. Malnutrition is an especially serious problem among children. In 2022, 148 million children under five were stunted, while 45 million were underweight.

In addition, 37 million children in this age group were overweight. These conditions compromise the physical and cognitive development of children, negatively affecting their future.

Fight Hunger in Africa

The international community recognizes the gravity of the situation and is committed to meeting the challenge of hunger in Africa.

Organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Program (WFP) and others are working together to provide food assistance, promote sustainable agriculture and improve access to nutritious food.

However, it is crucial that these efforts are intensified and targeted more effectively. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of ending hunger by 2030 requires coordinated action in several areas.

Investments in agricultural infrastructure, modern agricultural technologies, rural development and food education are essential to improving food security in Africa. In addition, it is critical to address the underlying causes of hunger, such as conflict and climate change, through political and diplomatic solutions.

Conclusion

Hunger in Africa is a global crisis that requires immediate and sustained action. With more than 735 million people facing hunger, it is essential that the international community step up its efforts to tackle this problem. Hunger has devastating consequences for people, especially children, and compromises the sustainable development of the continent.

Only through a comprehensive and collaborative approach, which includes investments in agriculture, rural development and solutions to conflict and climate change, can we achieve a future where no one has to face hunger anymore.
