New Bridge Over Logone Central Africa League

New Bridge Over Logone Central Africa League

The Logone River has long been both a link and a barrier between the peoples of Chad and Cameroon. Despite the cultural proximity and fraternal ties, crossing the river has always been marked by dangers, such as fatal accidents and hippo attacks.

For thousands of residents, this natural separation made daily life difficult, restricting trade, transportation, and family interaction on both sides. Today, with the inauguration of a modern bridge connecting Yagoua and Bongor, this reality has radically changed.

Funded by a broad international coalition, the bridge, in addition to being a logistical breakthrough, symbolizes security, regional integration, and economic development for a region that has historically struggled with isolation.

A Dream Connection

Pierre Fissou, pedagogical advisor to the Mayo Danay departmental delegation for primary education in Yagoua, Cameroon, like thousands of people living on the banks of the Logone, is well aware of the dangers of crossing the river.

“I often go to Bongor for walks and fraternal exchanges, because we are brothers of the Chadians, only a natural border separates us.”

“But this separation was for a long time marked by risks and tragedies.”

For years, he had to resort to motorized pirogues or oars, or even ferries, some of which were faulty. He remembers the times when, for lack of other options, some people swam across the river, facing not only the capricious waters but also the threat of hippos and the constant danger of drowning.

“There were too many risks.”

“Many mishaps cost people their lives, sometimes even those closest to them,” he recalls sadly.

Pierre recently had the opportunity to cross the new bridge on an authorized tour. The experience was “unthinkable"The crossing, which usually took 45 minutes to an hour, took only a few moments. The impression was that they hadn't even changed banks.

For him, as for thousands of residents on both sides of the river, this bridge is more than just infrastructure; it's a dream come true, a connection between two people who have never stopped considering themselves family.

An Ambitious Project

The bridge over the Logone River, built with financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Development Fund (ADF), the European Union (EU) and the Governments of Cameroon and Chad, is a strategic investment of more than 578 million euros.

Completed after five years, the infrastructure put an end to the dangers and constraints of old modes of transport, opening a new era for cross-border trade.

By connecting Yagoua, a city in the far north of Cameroon, and Bongor, a city in the south of Chad, the bridge supports regional integration, one of the five priority objectives known as “High 5”, contained in the African Development Bank Group’s Ten-Year Strategy 2024-2033.

Visiting the bridge on November 27, AfDB Director General for Central Africa Serge N'Guessan hailed it as:

“A model of regional cooperation and a driver of economic transformation for Central Africa.”

A Pillar of Development

The bridge facilitates the movement of people and the transport of goods, reducing logistics costs and increasing business opportunities. Farmers and traders on both sides of the river, like Fatimé Mahamat, can already imagine the economic benefits:

“We will be able to reach new markets without risking our lives or our goods,” he says.

The bridge over the Logone is already establishing itself as a pillar of development and unity. For local residents, like Pierre Fissou, the bridge is above all a symbol of safety and closeness.

"We're just waiting for the official opening. On that day, there will be an explosion of joy that we won't be able to contain," he says expectantly.

With this initiative, the two neighboring Central African countries prove that, despite the challenges, an integrated and prosperous Africa is within our reach. For Pierre, Fatimé, and their fellow citizens, this bridge is much more than a simple structure; it is the promise of a better future.

Conclusion

The bridge over the Logone River is much more than concrete and steel; it represents hope, progress, and a shared vision of unity between two peoples. For the riverbank residents, it eliminates geographical and emotional barriers, transforming the risky journeys of yesteryear into safe and swift crossings.

The infrastructure stands as a testament to the collective determination to create stronger ties, foster development, and ensure a more prosperous future for all. It's a milestone that inspires the entire region, not just the locals, reminding us that with cooperation and vision, all limitations can be overcome.
