Grammys 2024: Tyla Defeats Burna Boy and Davido.
South African singer Tyla's victory in Grammys, last Sunday, surpassing four Nigerian nominees, intensified the rivalry between the two nations who are preparing for an exciting football clash, this Wednesday, in the CAN 2023 semi-finals.
Tyla Shined at the 2024 Grammys
This year saw the introduction of the award for the Best Performance of African Music, a measure widely welcomed on the continent, despite some criticism that it was long overdue. South African Tyla was the first winner and was happy to win the award with her song “Water”, leaving behind Nigerian artists such as Davido, Ayra Starr and Burna Boy.
"This is crazy! I never thought I would say I won a Grammy at 22!” she exclaimed.
The lack of Nigerian wins at the Grammys generated disappointment, highlighting the perceived lack of appreciation for Afrobeats and Afro RnB. Disappointed, the Nigerian artists retaliated, appealing to the national football team, the Super Eagles, to win the game against South Africa in the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2023), in Côte d'Ivoire.
The reaction in Nigeria was swift, with some interpreting the South African victory as an act of generosity, leaving room for a friendly confrontation at CAN 2023, while others fueled the controversy by demanding victory.
“South Africa won today but Nigeria will win on Wednesday where it matters most,” wrote a Nigerian on X.
Despite the fierce rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa, at the Grammys and beyond, Davido who did not win any awards despite his three nominations, congratulated Tyla.
The Recognition of African Music
The inclusion of the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys was enthusiastically received by Harvey Mason Jr, CEO of the Recording Academy. This change represents a positive step, recognizing that African music has become an integral part of global pop music.
In the past, some African artists have managed to win Grammys. South African Miriam Makeba was the first in 1966, when she received the award for Best Folk Recording for her collaboration with Harry Belafonte. There were several others, including the Nigerian Burna Boy who won the award for Best Global Music Album in 2021.
Music critics, including music producer Ian Brennan, consider the inclusion of an African category to be overdue. Brennan points out that, historically, the Grammys have neglected music from the continent.
Harvey Mason Jr recognized the need to make further adjustments to the Grammys, which traditionally focus on American music. The inclusion of an African category demonstrates a necessary adaptation to encompass the diversity of global music.
This year's Grammys ceremony also stood out for Burna Boy's performance, who was the first Afrobeats artist to perform at the Grammys. This was a unique opportunity to showcase the Afrobeat style on an international level.
