COP28: AI Against Fossil Fuels.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) international Amnesty (AI) today called on governments participating in COP28 to take concrete steps, including eliminating “in urgent need” of the use of fossil fuels, and that guarantee the right to water.
“Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa face multiple crises, such as staggering debt, destruction and damage caused by conflict.”
“Now, there is the worsening water shortage due to the climate crisis in a region where water is increasingly scarce.”
Read a statement from AI's regional advisor for economic, social and cultural rights, Kristine Beckerle.
In the note, cited by the Spanish news agency Efe, it is noted that;
“The response of the governments of countries in this region has been woefully inadequate to guarantee the right to water.”
Furthermore, AI recalls that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which are the host country of the world meeting on the environment and climate, win;
“Immense revenues from their national fossil fuel companies.”
These companies, stresses this NGO, are worsening the climate crisis with their enormous production of hydrocarbons and even have plans to increase production.
“The governments at COP28, which for the second consecutive year takes place in a country in the Middle East and North Africa, must heed the call from activists and civil society groups.”
“A progressive, complete, urgent and fair elimination of fossil fuels must be carried out, with emphasis on financing the fight against climate change based on human rights”, concluded Beckerle.
The language regarding fossil fuels, without advocating a reduction or abandonment of their use, has been one of the points of tension at the climate conference, which enters its second and final week today, says Efe.
COP28 began on November 30th and is running until the 12th in Dubai, with the second week of the summit starting today, which ends with at least two days of final negotiations. Today, the thematic program is dedicated to young people, children, education and skills.
