Petro de Luanda was crowned champion of the fourth edition of the Basketball Africa League (BAL 2024), after beating Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya 107-94 at the Kigali Arena, in Rwanda.
This historic triumph represents not only a significant victory in basketball, but also symbolizes the perseverance and determination of a nation that continues to reach new heights in various spheres.
By becoming the first sub-Saharan African team to win the BAL finals, Petro broke the hegemony of clubs from Egypt and Tunisia, ending the dominance of North African teams, thus raising the prestige of Angolan sport internationally.
A Triumphant Journey
This Saturday, May 31, Petro de Luanda won the BAL 2024 title by defeating Al Ahly Ly of Libya 107-94 in the final held at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. This victory marks the Angolan club's first continental title since winning the FIBA Africa Champions Cup in 2015 in the Angolan capital, Luanda.
During the final, Petro struggled and trailed 52-40 at halftime. However, a stunning third-quarter comeback allowed the Angolan team to end Al Ahly Ly's three-game winning streak in the postseason.
The team captain, Carlos Morais, recognized the importance of this victory, highlighting that “that's what was missing” after less impressive campaigns in the last three seasons.
Nicholas Faust led the new champions with 24 points, while Markeith Cummings contributed 20 points and Cleusio Castro had a remarkable performance with 10 points off the bench. Jo-Lual Acuil Jr., named 2024 BAL MVP, finished with 15 points.
