AfCFTA Needs Robust Infrastructure

A well-planned and implemented infrastructure network can be the key to unlocking Africa's commercial potential.

AfCFTA Needs Robust Infrastructure.

To reap the benefits of the African Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA, acronym in English), African countries need policies that encourage the evolution of infrastructures, is what António Pedro, the interim representative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECE),

"To benefit from the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA, we must overcome the infrastructure deficit."

“It is not the absence of plans and projects that impedes Africa's structural transformation, but the lack of political space to advance this agenda”. He argued.

The key to attracting sustainable investments

During the session on Africa, at the 12th Annual Investment Meeting, focused on creating a new framework to attract sustainable and productive investments, António Pedro stated that:

“To attract sustainable and cross-border investment in Africa, the physical and digital infrastructure must be in place.”

For António Pedro, infrastructure is not just a question of construction and logistics. It is the foundation that allows the implementation of policies and the materialization of strategic plans. More than that, it is an indicator of a country's ability to host and sustain investment.

Developing robust infrastructure drives the economy, promoting job creation, skills development, innovation and growth. These, in turn, attract investors looking for stable, dynamic and growing markets.

Additionally, a solid and reliable infrastructure is a prerequisite for exploring new markets, expanding commercial operations and attracting sustainable investments. With the right infrastructure, African countries will be able to promote and sustain inclusive growth, diversify their economies and improve competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Sustainable and cross-border investments are essential to the realization of the AfCFTA. These investments can power Africa's economic transformation by boosting industrialization, promoting economic diversification and increasing the resilience of African economies.

In this context, the preparation of physical and digital infrastructure becomes a strategic factor, capable of defining Africa's future in the global trade scenario. Only with prepared and adequate infrastructure can Africa reap the benefits of the AfCFTA and position itself prominently in international trade.

AfCFTA: The world's largest free trade zone

The AfCFTA, which came into force in 2019, has become the world's largest free trade area, encompassing 1,3 billion people and a combined GDP of approximately US$2,5 trillion, around US$2,3 trillion euros. Its ultimate long-term goal is to eliminate customs barriers in the 54 African countries.

“We must invest in science, technology and innovation to maintain long-term competitiveness and build regional value chains that can generate more added value and increase the market share of African companies”.

He defended, adding that Africa can take advantage of its natural resources to create sustainable value chains.

The free trade zone is one of the greatest aspirations of the African Union. According to Emily Mburu, director of the AfCFTA secretariat, the diversification of African countries could be boosted and advances in industries accelerated if the mobility of people on the continent were intensified.

The African business landscape faces significant challenges. To boost internal and external trade, the continent, rich in natural resources and human potential, needs adequate infrastructure. Thus, infrastructure is a crucial element for strengthening the African economy.

The link between infrastructure and trade

The relationship between a robust infrastructure and commercial progress is indisputable. Roads, ports, airports and telecommunications networks are essential components to facilitate trade and link markets, making them accessible and reducing transport and communication costs.

A well-planned and implemented infrastructure network can be the key to unlocking Africa's commercial potential.

The AfCFTA has the potential to transform the continent's economic landscape, opening new markets and creating unprecedented opportunities for African companies. However, there are challenges that need to be overcome for the agreement to be fully effective, such as the need to improve infrastructure.

Investing in infrastructure can generate a range of benefits for African economies. It can create jobs, stimulate economic growth and make local businesses more competitive. Better infrastructure can also facilitate trade and help maximize the benefits of the AfCFTA, placing Africa in a more prominent position in global trade.

The Importance of Green Industries

Green industries, which include renewable energy, recycling and clean technologies, represent a promising path for Africa's sustainable development. By adopting green practices, African countries can benefit from a more sustainable and resilient economy, which attracts environmentally conscious investors and paves the way for the creation of green jobs.

"Green industries are crucial to Africa's competitiveness in a future of zero-carbon markets."

António Pedro emphasized, highlighting the relevance of this sector for attracting foreign investment.

This sector plays a key role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, which is essential to meeting the Paris Agreement objectives and combating climate change. Furthermore, green industries can contribute to economic diversification, reducing Africa's dependence on fossil fuels and other polluting industries.

Thus, Africa has the opportunity to position itself at the forefront of sustainable development, investing in green industries to increase its competitiveness, attract foreign investment and contribute to a future with zero carbon emissions. It is a challenge, but also a unique opportunity for the African continent.

UNECA and the Promotion of Trade in Africa

UNECA plays a decisive role in promoting trade and development in Africa. The initiatives and programs implemented by UNECA have as their primary objective the improvement of infrastructure and the promotion of trade, thus establishing itself as a fundamental element for the economic development of the continent.

Through its actions, UNECA contributes to the creation of strategic policies and the implementation of projects that seek to increase the efficiency and capacity of existing infrastructures. This work is essential to promote economic growth, diversification and competitiveness, which are crucial to Africa's prosperity.

UNECA also acts as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences among African countries, promoting regional cooperation and sharing of best practices. This cooperation and coordination are essential to maximize the impact of implemented policies and actions.

Conclusion

Investing in infrastructure is an essential step for Africa to fully benefit from the AfCFTA. This investment, along with UNECA initiatives and the effective implementation of the agreement, can unlock the continent's economic potential and place Africa at the forefront of global trade.

As such, UNECA's role in promoting trade in Africa is invaluable. By focusing on improving infrastructure and promoting trade, UNECA is making a significant contribution to the sustainable and inclusive economic development of the African continent.
