Fatou, the world's oldest gorilla turns 66.

On April 13, 2023, the gorilla “Fatou” turned 66, remaining the oldest known ape of its species. Fatou lives in Berlin Zoo, where she was taken at the age of two, in 1959.

The exact date of his birth is uncertain, as his arrival in the German capital from West Africa, where he was born in freedom, remains a mystery. According to legend, a sailor left the animal in a tavern in Marseille to settle a debt. After being transported across Europe, she was purchased by the Berlin Zoo in Germany.

In 2019, Fatou was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the "oldest gorilla living in captivity", following the death of Trudy, the previous record holder, who was born in 1956.

Fatou is one of a select group of animals at the Berlin Zoo that were born in the wild. In captivity, gorillas usually live to be 50 years old.
