Nigeria Makes History in the Fight Against Meningitis
Nigeria has become the first country to introduce a “revolutionary” meningitis vaccine, the World Health Organization has announced (OMS) in a statement released on Friday.
The Men5CV vaccine offers powerful protection against the five main types of meningococcal bacteria – A, C, W, Y and X – that cause the disease. Known by the trade name MenFive, it offers broader protection than the vaccine currently used in much of Africa, which is only effective against type A.
Defeat A Deadly Enemy
According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, the implementation of the new vaccine in Nigeria represents a step closer to the goal of completely eliminating meningitis by 2030.
“Meningitis is an ancient and deadly enemy, but this new vaccine has the potential to change the course of the disease, preventing future outbreaks and saving many lives,” he said.
Meningitis is inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord and can be fatal. Symptoms often include headache, fever and stiff neck.
There are multiple causes, including viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic pathogens. The most serious form – bacterial meningitis – can also result in blood poisoning and can seriously disable or kill within 24 hours of infection.
Vaccination campaign
Nigeria is among 26 African countries hyperendemic for meningitis, an area known as the African Meningitis Belt.
The WHO reported that 153 people died in an outbreak in Nigeria between October 1, 2023 and March 11, 2024. A vaccination campaign was launched in late March to reach more than one million people aged up to 29.
“Northern Nigeria, particularly Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe states, have been severely affected by the deadly meningitis outbreak.”
“This vaccine provides healthcare professionals with a new tool to stop this outbreak and also put the country on the path to elimination.”

The WHO said the new vaccine has the potential to significantly reduce cases of meningitis and advance progress against the disease, which is especially important for countries like Nigeria where multiple serotypes are present.
