ECOWAS Concerned About War in Iran
In a statement published today on social media, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) called on all parties to exercise "maximum restraint" and act in full compliance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law, in particular with the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
“The intensification of military actions against Iran risks increasing instability in the Middle East, with serious consequences for international peace and security in general and, in particular, for global energy markets, trade and food supply chains, especially for Africa and other vulnerable regions.”
"The protection of civilian lives and critical infrastructure must remain an absolute priority.".
The West African organization, whose rotating presidency is held by the Head of State of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, wrote without making any direct reference to the United States of America (USA), Israel, and Iran, limiting itself to registering "concern" about the situation in the Middle East.
"ECOWAS also calls for renewed diplomatic efforts within existing international and regional mechanisms, with a view to promoting dialogue, reducing tensions and restoring stability."
"ECOWAS fully supports the African Union's statements on this development and reaffirms West Africa's commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.""That's all," the organization's statement concluded.
Israel and the US launched a military attack against Iran on Saturday to "eliminate the imminent threats from the Iranian regime," and Tehran responded with missiles and... drones against US bases in the region and Israeli targets.
US President Donald Trump stated that the operation aimed to "eliminate imminent threats" from Iran, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the joint action against what he described as an "existential threat."
Early this morning, a presenter on Iranian state television tearfully announced the death of the Ayatollah, who had been in power for 36 years. Alireza Arafi, a religious dignitary and member of the Assembly of Experts and the Council of the Guardians of the Revolution, was appointed today to the triumvirate responsible for the transition following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran, however, declared a 40-day mourning period, as well as seven days of public holidays, for Khamenei's death.
Do you agree with ECOWAS's concern arising from this barbaric, unprovoked attack by the US and Israel on Iran? We want to know your opinion, do not hesitate to comment and if you liked the article, share and give a “like/like”.
