Cape Verde and São Tomé, the Freest in Africa
Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe are among the best ranked countries in Africa and the first among the PALOP (Portuguese Speaking African Countries), with regard to political rights and civil liberties. While Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique are classified as “partially free”, Angola and Equatorial Guinea are considered “not free”.
The political situation and respect for civil rights are crucial issues around the world, especially in Africa. O Freedom House annual report, released last Thursday, February 29, 2024, highlighted the classification of several African countries with regard to freedoms.
Classification of Countries in Africa
Freedom House's annual report includes scores (0 to 100) and detailed national reports on political rights and civil liberties for 195 countries and 15 territories around the world analyzing political and civil freedom across countries. Unfortunately, the report points to a continued decline in these aspects in Africa.
However, some countries in Africa stand out positively. Cape Verde, Mauritius and São Tomé and Príncipe are the first three countries, best ranked in Africa, in respect for political rights and civil liberties and have been consistently classified as “free”, being examples of African nations that have stood out in these aspects .
These nations have been praised for their respect for political rights and civil liberties, a significant achievement in a continental context where most countries face challenges in these aspects.
Several factors contribute to this positive rating. In both countries, there is a history of political stability and a commitment to democratic institutions. Furthermore, respect for freedom of expression and individual rights is a priority for these societies.
Decline of Freedom in Africa
Despite the success of Cape Verde, which is also among the freest countries in the world, Mauritius and São Tomé and Príncipe, the report highlights a worrying trend, the decline of freedom in Africa, where serious, recurring problems have contributed to this negative trajectory.
“Freedom in Africa has declined for the tenth consecutive year in 2023, due to armed conflicts, military coups and electoral irregularities”, considers Freedom House.
The report provides detailed scores for each country, allowing for an objective comparison and where we can see that some countries have made modest improvements, but unfortunately the vast majority have faced significant setbacks.
Unfortunately, there are countries with a very low rating in terms of freedom, the vast majority of which are African, such as South Sudan, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic, which are classified among the least free in the world, facing serious challenges in terms of civil and political rights.
This classification has a significant impact on the African population. Only a small percentage of Africans live in countries considered “free”, while the majority face restrictions on their individual and political freedom.
Individual freedom and rights are fundamental to human development and the progress of societies. It is essential that African governments work to guarantee these rights for all their citizens.
