Sudan Falls Behind Because of Gaza

More than 200 days of war in Sudan leave children on edge.

Sudan Falls Behind Because of Gaza.

More than 200 days of war in Sudan leave children on edge, warns The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). According to the agency, the country now has the largest child displacement crisis in the world, with 3 million minors fleeing widespread violence in search of safety, food, shelter and healthcare.

The war in this African country has already caused the worst child displacement crisis in the world, with 3 million minors fleeing widespread violence; many of them live in a state of “never-ending fear”; Unicef provides water, health, nutrition, safe spaces and education, but only 24% of the humanitarian appeal has been funded for 2023.

The United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef, has called for a redoubled commitment from the international community and all parties to the conflict to end the “relentless nightmare” experienced by millions of children every day in Sudan.

Unending Fear in Sudan

Most of them are inside Sudan and thousands more are sheltering in makeshift camps in neighboring countries.

Around 14 million children in Sudan are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. According to Unicef, many of them are living in “a state of unending fear, which includes fear of being killed, injured, recruited or used by armed groups”.

Reports of conflict-related sexual violence, including rape, have been numerous. With fighting intensifying in recent weeks in places such as Khartoum, Darfur and Kordofan, concerns are that violations of children's rights will continue to rise. To date, Unicef has received reports of more than 3,1 serious violations, including the murder and mutilation of minors.

The UN agency also warns that none of the Sudanese children have been able to return to school, putting the future of an entire generation at risk. Around 19 million children in Sudan are unable to return to the classroom, making this one of the worst education crises in the world.

Serious Health Risks

The imminent threat of deadly diseases such as cholera, dengue fever, measles and malaria is also increasing, with outbreaks already expanding. Currently, around 7,4 million children do not have access to clean water.

Almost half of them are under the age of five and are at serious risk of diarrheal diseases and cholera. Many others lack routine vaccinations against easily preventable diseases. More than 700 children face severe acute malnutrition, with the risk of dying without treatment.

Unicef and partners are providing assistance to millions of children within Sudan and neighboring countries, including water, health, nutrition, safe spaces and learning opportunities.

But the agency warns that needs exceed resources and that only 24% of the financial appeal for 2023 has been met. It reinforced calls for support and said it needs safe and unhindered humanitarian access to provide life-saving supplies and services to all children in need.
