May 19: World Family Doctor Day

Family doctors not only improve individual well-being, they also strengthen community health as a whole.

May 19: World Family Doctor Day

World Family Doctor Day is celebrated on May 19th and has been celebrated annually since 2010. On this day, we thank these specialists for their role in the well-being of the community and in the lives of each of us.

They are on the front lines of healthcare, present at every stage of our lives and know us like few others, thanks to their daily dedication and professionalism.

The Origin of the Date

World Family Doctor Day was created in 2010 by WONCA – World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians, an international organization representing family physicians and general practitioners.

The initiative stemmed from the need to highlight and recognize the fundamental role that family doctors play in healthcare systems worldwide. The choice of May 19th as the commemorative date aims to provide an annual opportunity to celebrate and recognize the hard work and dedication of these professionals.

Over the years, this date has been marked with various activities and events in different countries, including conferences, workshops, awareness campaigns and tributes to family doctors.

The celebration of World Family Doctor Day also serves to reinforce the importance of public policies that support and strengthen primary health care, recognizing that an efficient and effective health system begins with strong and accessible basic care for all.

The Purpose of the Date

The objective of World Family Doctor Day is to promote the importance of health care for individuals and their families, valuing the role of the family doctor in the health and well-being of the household.

Family physicians play an irreplaceable role in public health, providing continuous and comprehensive care and focusing on the prevention and management of chronic diseases. This not only improves patients' quality of life but also significantly reduces healthcare costs.

Your ability to establish lasting, trusting relationships with patients contributes to more effective communication and more personalized care, which translates into lower hospitalization rates and more positive health outcomes.

In a country where Primary Health Care is robust, there is more equitable and comprehensive access to health services, especially for disadvantaged populations who often face multiple risk factors and have lower health literacy.

By ensuring accessible, quality health care, Family Doctors not only enhance individual well-being, they also strengthen community health as a whole.

The Importance of the Family Doctor

A family doctor is a professional who cares for an individual or family for twenty to thirty years, from childhood to adulthood, from the mother's pregnancy to the child's adolescence. More than a doctor of diseases, he or she is a doctor of prevention and personal care, managing medical, psychological, and economic issues.

They are the foundation of any health system. Countries with a robust primary health care structure have better health, fewer health inequalities, and fewer hospitalizations. Family doctors provide accessible and comprehensive care for most health needs, most illnesses, and most preventive activities.

Continuity of care with a family doctor saves lives. Patients in areas with more family doctors live longer and have fewer hospitalizations. Patients followed by their family doctor have a mortality rate reduction of approximately 19% and spend 22 to 33% less on healthcare. The longer this relationship lasts, the greater the benefits.

After 15 years with the same family physician, hospitalizations have been reduced by 28% and mortality by 25%. Continuity of care allows the family physician to get to know the patient, their family, and their social context. This builds strong relationships of trust and facilitates communication, reducing recurrences to other levels of care.

Conclusion

Celebrating World Family Doctor Day recognizes the importance of these professionals in building more efficient and humane healthcare systems. It's a day to recognize their daily commitment and tireless dedication to promoting health and improving the quality of life of the families they support.

This day helps us recognize that without their work, prevention, early diagnosis, and effective disease management would be much greater challenges. For all these reasons, Mais Afrika reiterates, on behalf of all our readers, our gratitude and admiration for all Family Doctors, the fundamental pillars of a sustainable and equitable healthcare system.
