the summit of BRICS, brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is scheduled to take place in August in South Africa, however, Russian President Vladimir Putin made the decision not to attend the event in person after months of controversy involving an international arrest warrant against him, issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Russia, facing the accusation of the TPI for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, which led to the arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin. As a member of the ICC, South Africa has obligations to cooperate in the arrest of individuals subject to warrants, but the sensitive circumstances of the summit made the matter complex.

Russia officially denied having warned the African country about complying with the warrant, but made it clear that Putin's arrest would be interpreted as a "declaration of war".

The decision was announced by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and reinforces the relevance of the BRICS summit for relations between member countries.

The diplomatic quandary over Putin's arrest has even reached the courts, with the Democratic Alliance seeking to force the South African government to detain him and hand him over to the ICC. However, President Ramaphosa responded that such an action would be "irresponsible" and would threaten South Africa's national security.
